The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has ordered 2GB radio host Alan Jones to issue an on-air correction after the media watchdog found the announcer violated broadcasting rules citing inaccurate climate change data.
The violation occurred during an infamous episode of Jones’ show where he suggested Scott Morrison should shove a sock down NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Arden ‘s throat. ACMA found his comments also breached decency rules.
In the same episode, Jones incorrectly asserted that biomass is a fossil fuel, according to ACMA. He also incorrectly presented data relating to the percentage of energy use form solar wind in Australia and New Zealand. ACMA rules his comparison was “not based on like-for-like data”.
ACMA chair Nerida O’Loughlin said: “The factual error and inconsistent information were used to incorrectly portray that Australia generates more of its energy from renewables than New Zealand.”
Jones also broke broadcasting decency rules with his Ardern comment, where he said: “Now I hope Scott Morrison gets tough here with a few backhanders” and “I just wonder whether Scott Morrison’s going to be fully briefed to shove a sock down her throat”.

O’Loughlin said Jones’ violent metaphors were highly offensive and did not meet contemporary community expectations.
“Acknowledging that the broadcast had caused offence to many in the community, 2GB did not oppose ACMA’s breach finding in relation to decency,” said O’Loughlin.
She added that with Jones impending retirement and his apology at the time, he will face no further discipline.
