Is Alan Jones Plotting A Radio Return In Light Of 2GB’s Slump?

Radio veteran Alan Jones has hinted at a return to radio, after 2GB’s breakfast show lost its top spot in the radio ratings for the first time in 18 years.

Last year, Jones stepped away from the mic and his number one breakfast show after a 35-year career in radio, handing the reins over to Ben Fordham.

Fordham’s ratings started off steady but have since declined, coming to a head when the ratings revealed that he had been officially knocked out of Sydney’s lead breakfast spot by Kyle and Jackie O on KIIS 1065.

Although Jones has had numerous controversies – such as saying Julia Gillard’s father “died of shame” – he also secured a record-breaking 226 consecutive breakfast radio survey wins for 2GB.

While citing health as the reason he was leaving his 2GB breakfast show, Jones hasn’t retired from the media.

Instead, the 80-year-old has been hosting a show on Sky News Australia called Sky After Dark (and showing off his colourful suit collection).

According to The Australian, Jones’ contract with Sky News Australia is set to end in November, which could clear up space for a return to the airwaves.

Jones hinted at a return when he recently told the publication: “What the future holds, who knows?

“Am I interested in radio? I’m interested in the media, I’m interested in the prosecution of ideas, that’s why I write and I broadcast on TV, but in relation to radio, who knows?

“It’s an open field, it’s a fertile field, if someone was interested in discussing something of that kind, I may be interested, I may not be interested.

“If someone wants to put a piece of paper in front of me, I’ll be able to give them a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ in five days.”

Even Kyle Sandilands has offered support, from one shock jock to another. Sandilands told The Daily Telegraph that he would, ‘love,’ to see Jones return.

“He still has plenty to say.”

This certainly seems to be the case: Jones recently said on Sky News that “Gladys Berejiklian has lost the right to govern and to be believed.”

The question remains though: will he return to 2GB to keep saying it?
